Acetic acid is a colorless liquid with a strong, pungent odor. It has a melting point of 16.6°C, a boiling point of 117.9°C, and a relative density of 1.0492 (20/4°C), making it denser than water. Its refractive index is 1.3716. Pure acetic acid solidifies into an ice-like solid below 16.6°C, which is why it is often called glacial acetic acid. It is highly soluble in water, ethanol, ether, and carbon tetrachloride.
